White linen
is a frequent motive in Serbian folk songs.
As a symbol of purity, white linen follows a man through life:
at birth, he is swaddled in it;
at his baptism – wrapped in it;
at his wedding – bound by it;
as a wedding guest – presented with it;
during his life he wears it, and is finally shrouded in it.
The Group Belo Platno was founded in Belgrade in 1997 through the engagement of enthusiasts interested in playing kaval and traditional singing.
The main characteristics of the music of Belo Platno are the Balkan modal style, striking female voices and the playing of traditional musical instruments.
The musical arrangements for group performances are based on fields researches and other audio recordings. The songs are sung in local Serbian dialects.
Today the group “Belo Platno” is made up of individuals – artists on a joint quest for beauty. The main motive of the group is the preservation of the spirit of traditional culture reached through its very sources but also the search for personal experience and expression through music. The search is under way, and the results shall be announced by means of live performances, albums and these web pages...
